The Grey’s Anatomy of a Pretzel: The Knot

Traditional Bavarian Classic Soft Pretzel

Did you know that the pretzel has two parts? In this segment of The Grey’s Anatomy of a Pretzel, we are taking a look at the knot.

The knot shape of the pretzel is unique to the pretzel and had taken off in the world of fashion, with jewelers tying pretzel knots with their chain and women tying scarves into pretzel knots.

The knot has even founds its way into everyday dialogue. According to FoodWorks-Intl, the phrase “tying the knot” may date back to Switzerland and the year 1614 “when royal couples wished for happiness with a pretzel forming the nuptial knot.”  This practice is similar to how we break the wishbone at Thanksgiving.

Now that’s twisted food for thought.
