Raising a Young Family and Growing Small Business

by: Kim Holstein, Chief Inspiration Officer at home and work

Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels is a family owned and run business.

You know what’s funny?  I always pictured, and hoped, my life would be like this.  Shuffling kids off to school, hopping on a conference call on the way to the bakery, trading e-mails with my daughter’s Girl Scout Troup leaders, negotiating with vendors, and making sure I’m at the kids’ bus stop each afternoon.  This is how I wanted our life to be.

Sure, raising three young children and running a stuffed, soft pretzel company has been a challenge.  But this has been a delicious journey that I recommend to any woman who wants her pretzel and to eat it too.  Being an entrepreneur does not mean you have to sacrifice your home life.  My husband Scott and I have worked alongside each other for fifteen years.  Our kids, Sonia, Dani and Aiden learned to twist pretzels before they could ride a bike.  We’ve twisted together our business and personal lives, very successfully I think.

Scott and I often talk to budding entrepreneurs about how to start and run a small business.  We love to watch businesses come to fruition, especially when these business owners have their families involved.

Sonia, Dani and Aiden enjoy our business (and not just eating the yummy pretzels).  We already see Sonia, 10, leading the charge at her school to help raise funds for a school on the South Side of Chicago.  Dani, 8, submerged herself in our Pretzel Dough program where we’re helping schools to raise “dough” for programs and activities.  And Aiden’s just 6-years-old, so while not yet a business man, he’s proud that Mommy and Daddy are on a box of his favorite pretzels.

Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels is a family owned and run business.  And for that I’m not only proud, but also thankful.

Celebrate “Read Across America Day” with Your Kids!

March 2nd is “Read Across America Day”, sponsored by the National Education Association. It’s also Dr. Seuss’s birthday! It’s a great day to celebrate reading with kids and calls for every child to be reading in the company of a caring adult.

Reading with kids is truly a inspiring experience. There’s no doubt that when children are read to and read for pleasure, they are more successful in school. Introduce kids to magical stories. Share stories that will inspire them. Make them understand that reading is fun and not just homework.

We know first hand the impact books can have. Kim and Scott met at a book signing by Richard Bach, an author who writes stories about soul mates and airplanes. From that moment, they decided to fly high together and went on an inspired to journey that included founding our passionate soft pretzel business and nurturing communities along the way.

Empowering kids is a cause that’s close to our hearts. Our “Pretzel Dough” program provides a percentage of our grocery sales to schools. We are reimbursing participating schools $1.00 per UPC (proof of purchase barcode) on any Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzel 4-count item until the end of the 2011 school year.

Pull up a chair, pick up a book, grab your favorite Kim & Scott’s pretzel and share a story with your kids. The possibilities are endless. We hope that you find a story that inspires you the same way Richard Bach inspired Kim and Scott. We hope that you’ll share your favorite book with us. We’d love to know what you’re reading and what books inspired you!

Happy Valentine’s Day Pretzel Fans!

Valentine’s Day is an important day at Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels. Our company was founded by a remarkable “Twist of Fate” and we’d like to share the story of our founders, Kim and Scott. Ready for a truly inspired love story?

Kim and Scott met at exactly 8:13 PM on October 20, 1994 at a book signing by Richard Bach, who writes about soul mates and airplanes. From that first moment, they knew they were meant to fly-high together. What started as a twist of fate eventually led to a family and a magical soft pretzel business.

A "Twist of Fate" brought Kim & Scott together

Since then they have been passionate about pretzels and nurturing the community. They decided to express their joy by making sure that good comes from every pretzel they make. Their “Pretzels with a Purpose” initiatives have support many causes that are close to their heart. It’s all a part of their goal to make something bigger than themselves.

And the rest is pretzel history!

What “Twist of Fate” has inspired you in your life? We’d love to hear your stories! Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter and share in our twisted journey.

A Super Bowl Party Treat with a Twist!

If you’ve been following our blog, chances are you know that we’re HUGE football fans here at Kim & Scott’s, and we treat Super Bowl Sunday like a national holiday. We’d love to actually be at the game, but watching at home is pretty rewarding too. It means celebrating with our friends, watching twisted commercials and especially enjoying the food!

When it comes to hosting a Super Bowl party, we know recreating the stadium experience takes more than a hi-definition TV and a group of cheering fans. It takes the ultimate stadium treat – a Kim & Scott’s soft pretzel! Holding that piping hot pretzel will make your guests feel like they’re sitting on the 50 yard line.

Our gourmet pretzels are a perfectly portable treat that won’t get launched across the room when you jump out of your chair for a high-five. Hosts across the country will also appreciate that they’re easy to prepare without missing a single play.

Enjoying our pretzels at home has a fun twist, of course! That’s because they’re stuffed with delicious combinations of ingredients – from sweet (Chocolate Crumb) to spicy (Cheddar Jalapeño).

We hope that everyone has a fun and safe Super Bowl Sunday. Enjoy the food…and the game!

Ready for a New Look!

Say goodbye to the old Kim and Scott’s website, pretzel fans! As our company and Café continue to grow, we decided a little online makeover might be just the ticket to bring it all together, and of course, we couldn’t wait to share it with all of you!

Now, for anyone who has ever gone through the redesign process, you know there are some difficult steps involved, however, no one could have prepared us for how difficult these decisions would be! We now feel your creative pains, web designers! There were so many decisions to make, and so many different creative twists we could have taken, that we seriously debated having multiple Kim and Scott’s websites, just for creative purposes alone! We realized then and there that in order to make the right decision, we needed to keep the designs close to us at all hours of the day to see how we reacted to them on more of a regular basis. It is easy to walk into a boardroom and see a design that grabs you, but for our web site, we really aimed at creating a feeling that resonated longer than just a cool design. We wanted to create an online atmosphere that brought out positive energy and reinforced our company’s visions. From the colors that we chose to the layouts that were decided on, each piece to this online puzzle was discussed.

From putting the designs next to our bed before we went to sleep, to placing them on the dashboard of our car to glance at during red lights, these designs got a dose of real life in the world of Kim and Scott’s!
We know this strategy might have been a bit unorthodox, but our whirlwind of an idea paid off and because of that, we now have a creative direction all of us can agree on and a new web site we couldn’t love more!

We can’t wait to hear what you think, pretzel fans! Our launch date is coming up quick, but as usual, we couldn’t wait that long to tell you all about it!

Here is a quick sneak peak at what is still yet to come, pretzel people…..we hope you enjoy!
